Snooty Interview with Maggie and Leah!

Hello everyone! Today’s interview is with the gorgeous Maggie and her wonderful owner, Leah. Read on to find out all about how Maggie captured Leah’s heart and found her forever home!

Name of your greyhound: Maggie

Age of your greyhound: 5 years old

What was it that inspired you to take the plunge and adopt a retired greyhound?
My boyfriend and I are “dog people” and have always wanted a dog. We had always agreed we would rescue and had seen so many greyhounds with charities like the Dogs Trust. The more we looked into the breed, the more we saw what a wonderful, quirky breed they are, and we thought a greyhound could be absolutely perfect for our lifestyle!

What made you choose your particular greyhound?
We initially only went to the kennels to meet greyhounds and spend some time with them to really get a feel for the breed before we made any decisions. On that first visit, we walked a few greys, including our Maggie, and she was just so full of personality. Every time we would give another dog any attention, she would come charging over for cuddles with her super waggy tail. We absolutely fell in love with her and took her home that same day as a “foster”. Four days later, we signed the adoption papers, as there was no way we were giving her back – haha!

What would you say was your biggest misconception that you had about the greyhound breed before you adopted one yourself?
I think my biggest misconception was that greyhounds are not good family pets as they’re not “playful” or “cuddly”. That could not be further from the truth! Of course, this always depends on the particular dog, but Maggie is the cuddliest, most loving dog. She plays wonderfully and is fantastic with our young niece and nephew!

What would you say was your biggest challenge with your greyhound when you first adopted her?
Maggie was very nervous of other breeds of dog and would freeze regularly on walks whenever we saw another dog, to the point where she would not walk past certain houses if she knew a dog lived there. However, with a lot of patience, treats and ensuring we built Maggie’s trust in us, she became a totally different dog! We also found walking her with other greyhounds really helped her confidence, as she copied their behaviour and learnt that other dogs are nothing to worry about. Now, she is super friendly with other dogs and will give them a good sniff!

How do you think you have changed as a person since adopting your greyhound?
Our whole life revolves around this 45mph couch potato now – haha! I definitely think our priorities have changed and Maggie has really helped us to make sure we take more time to just get outdoors, especially during this period with Covid-19.

What is your favourite thing about your greyhound?
I can’t pick just one thing – she is an absolutely wonderful dog and we love her so much. I do love how friends, family and even strangers always comment on what a happy dog she is. She really brings so much joy and happiness to people that meet her. Does that sound weird?

What would you like to say to anyone who might be considering adopting a greyhound?
Do it! Work with your local trust to find a dog that will suit you, your home and your lifestyle and you won’t regret it!

Thanks again to the beautiful Maggie and Leah!

Until next time…
Love and snoot kisses,

Berry x
