Our Foster Dogs and Experiences

Our Foster Girl – the sweet Apple of our eyes!

Hello, everyone! Shortly after Christmas, we had the absolute pleasure of fostering an incredibly sweet older greyhound, named Apple. This foster placement was rather unexpected, yet it was oh-so wonderful, and it once again reminded us that one should never underestimate a dog. Read on to discover Apple’s story…

***

One bright morning, in the beautifully calm period between Christmas and New Year, we popped down to our adoption kennels for our usual help with dog walking. As I walked along the individual kennels, working out who needed to be walked next, I suddenly discovered a peaceful, white and grey little face staring back at me… This gorgeous dog was not standing by her door, excitedly demanding my attention – instead, she was curled up in her bed, looking over at me, with a sweet, timid demeanour. She was introduced to me as Apple and the kennel staff explained that she had an adorable temperament. They just could not understand why someone hadn’t yet chosen her for adoption, despite an appeal already being launched for her. Our suspicions were that, sadly, because she was an older girl at six years old, people had overlooked her. This broke my heart and, before we could change our minds or think too much, she was in our car with us, on the way to our home.

At this point, I have to say that, other than Niko, I don’t believe I have fallen in love with a snoot as quickly as I did with Apple. She was just divine. From the moment she entered our home, she revealed her sweet, gentle presence and I knew straight away that she would make the most wonderful companion. She gently followed me around our home, approaching for affection and cuddles, slept quietly on her bed all night long, was respectful around Niko and just generally was an angel.

Not only was she slightly older, but she also had bred litters of puppies, and you could really feel her mothering, nurturing nature. She just fitted in, so unassumingly, from the first moment she entered our home. So I very soon realised that she did not need a long-term foster placement. What she needed was for the right family to come along, who would appreciate her sweet and sensitive nature.

Once we had put together a special appeal for darling Apple, we expected that she would be staying with us for at least a month… But, fate intervened (or so I believe), and a lovely, kind lady contacted us. She had a sweet, male greyhound already and she was looking for a calm girl, particularly because she cared for a close family member at home. Within a few hours, they had met Apple and it all fell into place. She loved them and they loved her. The next day, they brought her into their home and the rest is history!

Apple is an example of a dog who was most likely overlooked due to her age or perhaps because she was so docile. Our own boy Niko was considered to have “no personality” by others who viewed him before we did. But put it this way: if we didn’t intend to continue fostering other greyhounds, Apple would have been ours. So, if you consider adopting a greyhound or a rescue dog, please consider the older dogs, the calmer dogs or the slightly injured dogs. It could be the best decision you ever make and, for those dogs, you will change their lives even more.

Until next time…

Love and snoot kisses,

Berry x
