The Greyhound Breed

Black Greyhounds and Their Struggle

Hello, everyone! Today, I wanted to use my blog to bring attention to an issue that many people are not aware of – the plight of black greyhounds. We have been fostering a gorgeous, female greyhound called Danielle and, honestly, she has been my inspiration for writing this. Read on to find out more…

Okay, let’s dive right in! Did you know that Battersea Dogs & Cats Home released data showing that black greyhounds are the unluckiest canines in their centre, being repeatedly overlooked and passed over by potential owners? As I have researched this further, I have discovered that many shelters around the world insist that “Black Dog Syndrome” is a very real phenomenon, resulting in black dogs, particularly larger pooches, being consistently ignored during the adoption process. Shockingly, many rescue centres believe that the reason for this could be due to the current era of Instagram that we exist in, as it can sometimes be trickier to distinguish the features of black animals in a photograph… Therefore, this can put off members of the “instagram generation” from adopting a black dog. How ridiculous is that?!

As I have discussed many times in my blog posts before, greyhounds are already very misunderstood creatures. On a daily basis, I interact with people who are in disbelief at how cuddly/affectionate/inquisitive/lazy/goofy/loyal/majestic greyhounds can be; these people usually become life-long converts to the greyhound breed after adopting their first snoot. Not only do greyhounds get overlooked for these reasons, but black greyhounds have a tougher time even more so.

So, in the future, if you decide to open your home to a rescue dog, please consider a black greyhound, like our foster girl, Danielle. The majority of our foster dogs have been black greyhounds and they have all been beautiful, soulful creatures with the biggest hearts. Furthermore, I urge you to educate others about the many, many black greyhounds who are waiting patiently in adoption kennels all over the country (and the world!), and who are so very deserving of a wonderful happily ever after.

The love of a black greyhound x

At our local adoption kennels in Brentwood, Essex, we have many lovely black snoots waiting for their forever families. Below, you can see Gemma, Fletch and Zara! If you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to email me by clicking here or get in contact through our Contact Page. Also, you can ring the kennels directly any day between 10am-1pm on 01277 373691.

Until next time…

Love and snoot kisses,

Berry x

  1. I’ve never understood why pets get overlooked because of their coat colour, especially if they are black! My greyhound is black- she chose us, we went for character over colour. Black greyhounds are so beautiful thanks for highlighting their beauty in your blog!

  2. I waited 40+years to achieve my dream of owning a greyhound ,as a teenager l walked the greyhounds before their race and fell in love with a beautiful large brindle boy Boston Rebel. I was so saddened at the treatment of these beautiful dogs if they did not achieve or were injured ,l so wanted to rescue one ,in my dreams a brindle dog but when I finally was in a position to adopt the kennels only had black dogs available so lo and behold the beautiful Liza chose us and although devastatingly we only had her for 14 months 🌈🐾we now have a beautiful black girl Suzi🖤🐾very different but gorgeous so l will never choose a dog by colour and actually think black is beautiful such glossy coats and so distinguished 🖤🖤🖤
