Adopting a Greyhound, Our Foster Dogs and Experiences

Adding Quinny to the Pack! The Power of a Nervous Hound.

Hello, everyone! Last year, you may remember that we fostered a gorgeous, brindle girl called Penny, who was absolutely terrified of the world. Well, one year on, Penny is now named Quinny and is completely thriving in her forever home! So much so that she has been a divine support for her nervous greyhound brother, Roscoe, and her poorly sister, Tiny. Read on to find out how courageous Quinny has used her new-found bravery to help two other hounds in ways that were never thought possible…

Sweet Quinny (formerly Penny)

First things first, why did Quinny’s humans consider adopting a third hound in the first place? Well, with experience helping Roscoe with his nerves and Tiny with her diagnosed lymphoma, they truly believed that they would also be able to help anxious, little Quinny. Little did they realise how much she would help them all in return!

On a chilly winter’s day, they met darling Quinny and told us immediately that they desperately wanted to take her home! Ultimately, they did not truly know how she would influence their little pack of greyhounds, but they knew that they had a very shy, gentle boy, who adores other greyhounds, and that their alpha-girl, Tiny, would still remain in charge! (The hierarchy of dogs in a household is a very real concept, which must always be considered before adoption.)

Settling in…

From the moment they brought sweet Quinny into their home, Tiny became her bossy, big sister and Quinny happily copied and followed her everywhere, growing braver and more confident each day. This was a fantastic achievement and her humans could not believe the change in her as the months passed by! However, the biggest surprise was how she began to help both other greyhounds, as her confidence grew…

As time progressed, they suddenly began to see the happy, puppy-like side of Tiny again, which they had not witnessed for a very long time due to her lymphoma, and she began to relish in playing with Quinny around the home! They suddenly felt like Tiny had decided that she had found strength to go on, through having younger Quinny around, with a new spring in her step!

With Tiny

Furthermore, their shy, quiet boy, Roscoe, slowly started to come out of his shell more around Quinny, with her calm nature clearly making him feel much more comfortable. When their humans first adopted poor Roscoe, he was too terrified to leave the house and the corner of their spare room had to be his “safe space”. He was extremely nervous to even go out into their garden. Now, for the first time in eighteen months, he will go for walks in the scary outside world (amazing!), as long as he has Quinny, his loyal companion, by his side, followed by a soothing, relaxed cuddle with him afterwards.

With Roscoe

Quinny’s lovely humans simply describe her as “perfect” and they cannot believe the impact this little, nervous girl has had on their greyhound family. When they first adopted her, they fully intended to be the ones saving her. But, in reality, they say that this little snoot has magically saved Tiny and Roscoe, encouraging them to absolutely flourish, as she herself has soared in confidence!

The perfect pack!

So, if you ever wanted evidence of how a well-matched pack of greyhounds can work wonders for all involved, here it is; particularly for Roscoe, adopting Quinny has been life-changing, in their humans’ words. Their individually-different “three musketeers” have impacted each other in ways that we all never imagined! And, for me, Shakespeare’s quote is imprinted in my mind: though she be but little, she is fierce. Never underestimate, overlook or dismiss the quiet ones – you do not know the power that lies within.

Thank you to Quinny’s humans for giving her a wonderful life and loving her so much. We are so proud.

Until next time…

Love and snoot kisses,

Berry x
